What’s in a Brand Name, Anyway?

I’ve never been one to care much about brand names. I’m not going to notice if your sweatshirt says Champion or if your purse says Coach. Wear what you like. Buy what makes sense. But if my power drill isn’t DeWalt… well, I might give that a little side-eye.

We live in a time when people line up for sneakers or fight over tumblers, and honestly, it makes me shake my head. A $45 Stanley cup doesn’t keep coffee any hotter than the $10 one from the feed store. And those designer sneakers? They don’t walk you any farther than the budget pair—though they might make your wallet a little lighter.

Don’t get me wrong, sometimes brand names do mean something. DeWalt makes tools that last. I’ll stand by that. But most of the time, you’re just paying for the name, not the quality.

Frugality isn’t about denying yourself—it’s about knowing where the real value is. If something works well, holds up, and earns its keep, then it’s worth your money whether it’s fancy or not. The label doesn’t change that.

So go ahead and buy the no-name sweatshirt. Use the feed-store mug. And save your money for the things that really matter—like a good drill that actually does the job.

Frugal Takeaway

Most brands sell comfort, not quality.

Buy for function, not for flash.
