How We Saved Money This Week (And Still Looked Fabulous Doing It)From groceries to grey coverage, we made every penny count.
This week at Frugalist Headquarters (aka our slightly crooked but very cozy home), we stretched our dollars like a pair of old yoga pants—and let me tell you, they held up beautifully.
Let’s start with the basics: food.
Thanks to our trusty Hannaford Rewards, we knocked $9.32 off our stock-up grocery run. That went straight toward ground beef, which we nabbed for $3.49/lb. I don’t know what your idea of a good time is, but mine definitely includes affordable protein. We shopped through the app and picked up our order curbside, which means no “accidental” pastries fell into the cart and no impulse jars of jam with fancy French names. And because I went through Fetch to order my toilet paper etc through Sams (have to plan ahead for this so we don’t pay the $8 shipping fee if we spend under $50) I earned 7000 points! That is $7 earned in the Fetch App my friends. BOOM!
Out in the garden (a.k.a. my green grocery store), we harvested our first zucchini—because of course, they’re early overachievers—and I thinned the lettuce for a lovely fresh salad. There’s nothing quite like eating something you didn’t pay $4.99 a bag for.
And the sun, bless her frugal heart, gave us a perfect week for line-drying the laundry. I hung everything on the canopy over the deck, and by evening, the socks were dry and the towels were delightfully stiff enough to count as exfoliants.
Now let’s talk glamour on a budget. I got my hair cut this week by my favorite local hairdresser—she’s just five driveways away. I could walk there if I didn’t always leave with little tufts of hair stuck to my neck. Bonus: I save on gas and gossip.
My hair is naturally grey now (well-earned, I assure you), and while I’m fine with it, my husband—bless his delusional heart—thinks it ages me. So guess who’s my personal hair colorist? Yep. He dyes it for me. I buy two boxes at once to get the best deal, and he applies it like he’s frosting a cake. A very sentimental, slightly nervous cake.
On the home front, we turned down the water heater to 120°F. It’s perfectly warm for dishes and showers, and when winter creeps back in (as it always does), we’ll bump it up again. For now, it’s saving us money with every steamy rinse.
And yes, it’s been hot. But instead of blasting the AC 24/7, we’ve been relying on our trusty fans during the day. I admit I cheat and run the bedroom AC on low at night so I don’t melt into the mattress—but hey, I’m not trying to win a medal here. I’m trying to sleep.
So that’s our week: food in the garden, dye in the hair, laundry in the breeze, and fans whirring like they’re cheering us on. We’re not just saving money—we’re doing it with style, salad, and only one mildly purple ear (he missed a spot).
Until next week,
Dagne
