“Shut the Front Door!” — Literally. We Fixed It.
You ever have one of those projects that starts out like, “Oh I’ll just tighten this screw,” and 3 hours later you’re covered in sweat, holding a power drill in one hand and your last ounce of patience in the other? Yeah. That was us with the front door.
This little drama started because the door just wasn’t shutting right. And I don’t mean “gives you a little attitude”—I mean we were practically body-slamming it closed like it owed us money. Plus, the bottom seal was halfway off, just hanging there like it had given up on life.
🛠 Time to Roll Up Our DIY Sleeves
I knew what had to be done, and it wasn’t going to involve a trip to Home Depot for a whole new door. Years ago, we discovered the entire bottom of this thing was rotten (yep, the whole dang thing), so we Frankensteined it back together with some elbow grease and a 2×4. No shame in the repair game—if it works, it works. WeI dug out the loose crumbly wood like a dentist going after bad molars, found a solid chunk of 2×4 that fit just right (a rare DIY miracle), packed the gaps with Bondo like I was frosting a cake, slapped on a new bottom seal, and we hung that baby back up.
Let me tell you something:
You’d never even k now and she shuts. And she keeps the cold out—which, frankly, is the whole point.
💥 The Screw Problem (Because of Course)
this time the seal was doing okay, but the screws holding it in had rusted to oblivion and a couple just snapped right off when we tried to tighten them. So, back down came the door. (Yes, again. I’m breathing deeply just remembering it.)
We pulled those suckers out and gave it the upgrade: fresh screws across the whole bottom. Tighter. Cleaner. Not going anywhere this winter.
🚪 The Sad, Sad Frame Seal
Then it was time for that sorry little frame seal. You know the one—it used to be fluffy and now it’s flat and useless like your ex’s promises. I scraped that mess off, stuck on a brand new one, and used painter’s tape to keep it in place while the adhesive set. Does painter’s tape look cute? No. Does it work? You bet your cold toes it does. I use that stuff for everything, you got a bag that is not resealable? I just roll up the top and stick painters tape on there, you can take it off and reseal again, sweet right?

☀️ Then the Sun Said “No Ma’am”
I was going to paint the frame… but then the sun turned that area into a literal oven and I was sweating through my clothes. That’s when I called it. Tools went away, kids got their bathing suits, and this DIY diva went to the lake.
Cold water > hot paint. Every time.

👊 What’s Next?
The front door is now blessedly draft-free and fully functional and ready for a magazine shoot should a camera crew show up for some reason? It works, it’s solid, and it’s not in the landfill. WIN. (and I didn’t spend a dime today, all that stuff was on hand).
Later this week (on a nice morning, thank you), I’ll:
- Fill the cracks in the frame with Bondo
- Sand it smooth like a pro
- Give it a fresh coat of paint
But let’s be honest—once that sun hits the door, it’s like trying to paint on the surface of Mars. So that job is getting scheduled strategically, starting with the side door where the morning shade is still my friend.
💪 Final Word?
If the door’s still standing and the wind’s not howling through it—you did it right.
You don’t need shiny. You need solid.
And sometimes that looks like rusted screws replaced, bondo in every crevice, and a swim at the lake afterward.
So go ahead, shut that front door—with pride.
