Monte Cristo Sandwiches with Maple Syrup
A Real Frugalist twist on a diner classic
Some nights call for a little diner-style comfort — nothing fancy, just golden bread, salty Virginia ham, and melty Swiss cheese with a drizzle of real maple syrup. Around here, we cook the bread like French toast first, then stack and grill it into a sandwich. It’s thrifty, filling, and every bite hits that sweet-savory spot. Served cut up with syrup and a side of crispy fried potatoes, this one’s a keeper.
Ingredients
- 8 slices sandwich bread (white, brioche, or homemade)
- About ½ lb Virginia ham, thinly sliced
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 2 eggs
- ½ cup milk
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard (optional)
- Pinch of salt and pepper
- Butter for frying
- Maple syrup, for serving
Instructions
- Whisk the custard:
In a shallow dish, beat eggs, milk, mustard (if using), salt, and pepper until smooth. - Make the French toast:
Heat a bit of butter in a skillet over medium heat. Dip each bread slice in the egg mixture and cook until golden brown on both sides. Set aside on a plate. - Assemble the sandwiches:
On one slice of cooked bread, layer Swiss, Virginia ham, and top with another slice of bread. Press lightly so it holds together. - Grill to melt:
Add a bit more butter to the pan and cook each sandwich 2–3 minutes per side, just until the cheese is melted and everything is hot through. - Serve:
Cut into halves or quarters and serve warm with real maple syrup drizzled over the top (or on the side for dipping).
Quick Frugalist Potatoes
Microwave whole potatoes until tender, cool slightly, slice, and pan-fry in oil until crisp and golden. Sprinkle with salt and pepper — simple and perfect.
