Starting Seeds: My Downfall (Until Now)
I have always wanted to be someone who starts my own seeds.
I picture it every year.
Trays of marigolds, petunias, and zinnias ready to fill my flower beds and the pots on my deck.
Heirloom tomatoes, cucumbers, summer squash, zucchini—all started right here at home.
It sounds so simple.
And yet… it has been my downfall.
🌱 Where It Kept Going Wrong
I’ve tried more than once.
But looking back, I can see the problems pretty clearly now:
- I didn’t have the right setup
- I didn’t have enough light
- And what light I did have was nowhere near close enough to the plants
- I didn’t give them the consistent attention they needed
I did experiment a little.
I planted some flower seeds in milk jugs I had saved, just to see what would happen. And honestly? I think those will make it into the garden.
But it still wasn’t the result I had in my head.

👀 The Moment It Clicked
I was over at my neighbor’s house recently, and she showed me her setup.
And that’s when it really hit me.
👉 I wasn’t failing at seeds—I was missing the system.
She had:
- proper lighting
- lights positioned close to the plants
- an actual setup designed for success
Not complicated. Not fancy.
Just… correct.
💸 Why I’m Not Giving Up on This
We’ve always bought starter plants.
And yes—it works.
But it also adds up fast.
Between vegetables and flowers (and I do love my flowers), it can get pretty pricey.
And I know there’s a better way.
📚 Doing It Right This Time
So instead of guessing again next year, I decided to do something different.
👉 I’m actually learning how to do this properly.
I went looking for resources that would walk me through:
- what setup I actually need
- how to get lighting right
- when to start what
- and how to not kill everything halfway through
This is the book I ended up choosing:
👉The Gardener’s Guide to Starting Seeds Indoors https://amzn.to/4ca2Z37
It breaks things down in a way that actually makes sense, especially if you’ve struggled like I have.

🌿 My Plan Going Forward
This year, I’ll work with what I have.
But next year?
👉 I’ll have a proper setup
👉 I’ll understand what I’m doing
👉 And I’ll finally give those seedlings a real chance
Because this isn’t about perfection.
It’s about getting better each year.
💬 Final Thought
If you’ve ever felt like seed starting “just doesn’t work for you,”
It might not be you.
It might just be that you didn’t have the right setup yet.
I know that’s where I landed.
And I’m ready to try again—this time with a plan.
I’ll share how it goes as I build out my setup—because I know I’m not the only one who wants to get this right.
