Take Your Chicken or Pork to the Next Level With Homemade Duck Sauce

You know that sweet, tangy duck sauce you get with Chinese takeout?

You can make a quick version at home with apricot preserves—and it takes about five minutes.

This is one of those ridiculously easy sauces that can take plain chicken or pork from well, that’s dinner to oh, this is GOOD.

Quick Apricot Duck Sauce

You’ll need:

  • 1/2 cup apricot preserves
  • 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon grated fresh ginger or 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 small clove garlic, finely minced
  • A pinch of red pepper flakes, optional

Put everything in a small saucepan and warm over low heat, stirring until the preserves melt and everything is well combined.

That’s it.

Taste it. Want it tangier? Add another splash of vinegar. Sweeter? A little more preserves. Want some heat? Toss in those red pepper flakes.

Now Use It!

Brush it over chicken thighs or pork chops during the last few minutes of cooking.

Spoon it over grilled chicken.

Use it as a glaze on a pork tenderloin.

Serve it alongside egg rolls, chicken tenders, or pot stickers for dipping.

Or—and this is probably what would happen at my house—put the leftovers in the refrigerator and start looking for things to dip in it.

One jar of apricot preserves just became a whole lot more interesting.

And you didn’t have to buy another bottle of sauce that’s going to live in the refrigerator door until nobody remembers when we bought it.

That’s my kind of recipe.
