Why I Ditched “Nonstick” for Good (And What I Use Instead)
Not too long ago, I found myself highly irritated with the so-called nonstick frying pans in my kitchen. They were sticking, peeling, and acting worn out—and we hadn’t even had them that long. For something marketed as convenient, they were anything but.
After reading more about nonstick coatings and how they break down, I decided to make a change. It started small, but it didn’t stay that way for long.

What I Changed
First, I switched all my frying pans to cast iron. And oh my goodness this 15″ pan is a live saver!

Why This Was a Frugal Win
1. I won’t have to replace them.
Cast iron and stainless steel are built to last. No coatings to fail, no mystery wear, no planned replacement cycle.
2. They aren’t horribly expensive.
When you compare them to the cost of repeatedly replacing nonstick pans, these were the smarter buy.
3. They actually work better.
Cast iron cooks evenly and becomes naturally nonstick with use. Stainless steel handles high heat beautifully and is incredibly versatile.
4. Dishwasher-safe matters.
Being able to load baking sheets and sauce pans straight into the dishwasher makes everyday cooking easier—and that convenience is worth a lot.
The Bigger Picture
This was one of those changes that checked all the boxes:
- healthier materials
- fewer replacements
- less long-term cost
- easier cleanup
Sometimes frugality isn’t about buying the cheapest option.
It’s about choosing tools that work hard, last forever, and make daily life simpler.
