  4. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer 1½–2 hours until beans are soft.
  5. Stir in the cornmeal packet during the last 10 minutes.
    Optional add-ins:
  • 1 can diced tomatoes
  • 1 can corn
  • browned ground beef or sausage
